HIV Prophylaxis, STD Screenings and Treatment

The reality is this—STDs can happen to anyone who is sexually active. OPFM wants to put an end to the misinformation and confusion surrounding STDs. In addition to screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV, OPFM provides valuable information about STDs, safer sex, STD treatments, and HIV PrEP.

What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily pill that reduces the risk of HIV infection in people who are HIV negative. PrEP has become one of our most powerful tools in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Taken regularly, PrEP can decrease risk of HIV infection by up to 99%. PrEP is most effective when paired with other prevention tools.

Screening Patients for Early Signs of Illnesses

Screening is essential to detect potential problems early, so they can be treated before they can develop into more serious conditions. A few common screening tests include:

  • Cholesterol: Keeping your good cholesterol (HDL) high and your bad cholesterol (LDL) low can help to prevent cardiovascular disease.

  • Fecal occult blood test: This is done to identify signs of colorectal cancer.

  • Pap smear test: A gynecologist usually performs this test to check for certain cellular changes that can indicate the presence or risk of cervical cancer. If you are a woman our providers at Oakland Park Family Medicine can perform this test for you.

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test: This is a blood test that is conducted to identify and prevent benign prostatatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer in men.

  • Blood glucose test: This is a blood test that is screened for signs of diabetes and pre-diabetes.
